Grohmann Knives Pictou, Nova Scotia
Grohmann Knives Limited is a small family business with a big reputation. It is an Old World story that began before the second World War, when a commercial buyer from Quebec traveled once a year to a factory in Sudetenland, then a German region of Czechoslovakia, to buy pocket knives. Every year the buyer would urge Grohmann the production manager at the plant, to come to Canada , promising him help to get started. Mr. Grohmann would always decline as he was happy in his own country, but after the war, the political situation grew desperate and in 1949 Rudolph Grohmann accepted the offer.
Within a year, Grohmann and his family arrived in Nova Scotia at the invitation of the provincial government-funded Pictou Cutlery, which closed after three years. Mr. Grohmann, determined to make knives, built a garage workshop & began producing & engraving folding knives designed by himself.
Shortly after, Deane H. Russell, the private secretary to Prime Minister MacKenzie King, was tired of only finding imported knives at every store he went into. He thought there should also be Canadian knives on the market, so set out for a knife maker to help him make his dream come true. Mr. Grohmann met with Mr. Russell and together they set out to design truly Canadian made knives. After field testing with the help of hunters & trappers across the far north, the D.H. Russell Belt Knife Original #1 was born.
"Grohmann Knives Limited" was formed in 1961 by the family and is still family run today. At Grohmann Knives, making knives is as much an art as a trade. The top quality knives are produced with as many as 53 steps between starting point & finished product.
D.H. Russell #1 Canadian Belt Knife
The Original Design Award winning D.H. Russell Canadian Belt Knife has been in production since 1957.
Grohmann and D.H. Russell teamed up to design a truly Canadian outdoor knife and through trial and testing
with hunters and trappers came up with this first design in the line.
By our last count, Grohmann knives have been copied by more than 16 different companies over the years.
High quality materials, along with outstanding designs and talented craftspeople, made in the traditional way.
Grohmann Steels
Grohmann's most popular steel is a european high carbon stainless steel. Which is comparable to the U.S.A. 440 series. This steel has stood the test of time due to its ease of sharpening and edge holding ability.
The Carbon belt knives are made from a C70-type european carbon steel.
The Pocket and Lock Knives use european steels somewhat comparable to AUS6. A Rockwell hardness 56-58 degrees is maintained throughout all of the Grohmann Outdoor knives.
As any quality steel goes, stainless or carbon, all knives should be kept cleaned and oiled to prevent rusting, especially the carbon steel knives.

Rosewood
Grohmann offers Rosewood in many beautiful variations. Ranging from deep, rosy brown to blonde strips, each handle is quite unique as no two handles are ever the same. Plantation grown mainly in East India, this special wood is selected for its durability, colour & rich grain. Rosewood is always an excellent choice for a quality handle.
High Lustre Water Buffalo Horn
All natural Water Buffalo Horn handles have a high shine finish with colour variations from jet black to black with streaks of pearl gray and white. Water Buffalo handles are naturally water-resistant and extremely durable.
Linen Micarta
Micarta is commonly called the "steel of the plastic family" for its strength and durability and is similar to G-10. Composed of layers of linen soaked in resin, it is lightweight yet tough, has a slighty linen textured look but fairly smooth to the touch when finished.
Stag Horn
Made from shed stag horn, a lasting natural choice that is pleasing to the eyes as it is to the hand. The natural grooves & indentations make a secure grip as well as providing a unique handle with every knife. Nice enough for a presentation piece but durable enough to use.

Marble’s Knives Gladstone, Michigan
Webster L. Marble came to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula in the early 1890’s and quickly gained the
reputation of being one of the regions finest "timber cruisers". His uncanny ability to look at a
specific forested acreage and predict the board foot yield made him very popular with the many
logging companies in the area. Marble loved the outdoors and the vast Upper Peninsula offered
innumerable opportunities to hunt, fish, camp and explore the environment. An inventor by nature
he was continually seeking to create useful tools and equipment that would be both practical and
durable in the outdoors.
By 1898 Mr. Marble had designed and patented his now famous "Safety Axe". A modest one room
manufacturing facility located behind his home became the "Marble Safety Axe Company" and the
dedicated entrepreneur was on his way. Over the next quarter century Marble designed and patented
axes, sporting knives, and numerous other hunting and outdoor related products. In 1911 the
company was renamed "Marble Arms and Manufacturing Company", the first of several name changes over
the years.
The Marble’s legacy lives on today in Marbles knives and axes. Still based in Michigan’s
Upper Peninsula, the owners and employees of Marble’s are now, more than ever, committed to Webster
Marble’s vision of making quality, durable, and practical Marble’s Knives for serious sportsmen
the world over.

Hermione Opinel No. 8 Folding Knife
|
The handle of this Opinel Hermione No. 8 folding knife is made from scrap Oak from from the current building of a replica of the frigate Hermione, in the old maritime arsena at Rochefort, France.
The Hermione was the ship that La Fayette obtained from the French government, after his successful mission to persuade the French to help the struggling American revolutionaries. In today's port town of Rochefort, where the French Royal Navy once built its ships, there is once again a shipbuilding project. The Hermione-La Fayette Association is crafting a replica of the ship which will re-enact the voyage of Lafayette in 1780 crossing the Atlantic to Boston.
Building commenced on the sailing frigate Hermione at the Rochefort Arsenal in 1778, based on the drawings produced by the engineer Henri Chevillard. The 44 m light frigate, fast and easy to handle, carried 3000 m2 of sail and was armed with 32 cannons. It had a crew of 300. Hermione is linked to the adventures and courage of one man- Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette.
As a young man in love with freedom, 19 year old Lafayette set off to fight at the side of American rebels for the independence of the United States of America. On his return to France to seek official support for the rebel cause, he managed to convince Louis XVI to send reinforcements. On March 21st 1780, the Marquis de Lafayette boarded Hermione, reaching Boston after a crossing of 38 days. He advised General Washington on the imminent arrival of French reinforcements.
On September 20th 1793, after fourteen year of service in the French Royal Navy, in particular in conflicts with the British, Hermione ran aground and was shipwrecked on the rocks off Le Croisic in France.
The Hermione-La Fayette Association has been reconstructing the frigate since 1997.
The boatyard is open to visitors at Rochefort France. Visit
