This fall Bark River Knives were contacted by their friends at U.S. Marine Corp Force Recon Training Unit about making a new mission specific knife. They wanted a knife that was more fighter then utility and they were kind of specific on the overall specs. Blade 5 to 6 inches long, but not over 6. Ergonomic Handle with an emphasis on sure grip and ease of maneuver from blade forward to reverse grip. Blade made from Stainless Steel. Additional Requests: A Single Self Guard. It must be Convex Ground with a Convex Edge. Swedge Grind to gain additional penetration through clothing and light gear. Overall length of the knife must be under 12 inches. Sheath must be Molle Compatible and Kydex. All of this has stemmed from the way their Marines are encountering contact. It is now a matter of Room to Room or Close Quarters like caves. They are finding that the combined technique of pistol and knife needs to be taught to all of their teams. Bark River has been given a "Go" on the design and are proceeding to prototype and then a limited run. Here is what we know so far. The blades will be will be 5.5" and Powder coated like the Bravo Neckers. The color choices for this run will be Black, Green, or Tan. The handle sets will be CNC Milled on both sides like the Bravo Necker handles, so that they fit into the skeleton of the tang. The same kind of fasteners as the Neckers but the screws and ferrels will be longer. The STS-5 will be made from 154CM Stainless at 58rc with Bark River’s Heat Treat for extra toughness. These will finish out at about .235" thick. All of the civilian versions will have a Thick Non-Sharpened Swedge. Bark River Warranty: The powder coating is not covered under the warranty once the knife is used. The powder coating will wear and they can chip in use.
